Roses
Roses are a popular and beloved flower all over the world and they are a common addition in South African gardens. Roses are known for their vibrant colours, fragrant blooms and elegant beauty and have become the classic flower for expressing emotions such as love, passion, gratitude and celebration.
Roses should be planted in a sunny area as they require at least six hours of full sun a day. Sunlight helps to develop flowers and vibrant colours, keeps the foliage dry thereby reducing the risk of fungal diseases and enhances photosynthesis providing energy for growth and flowering.
Use well drained soil, rich in organic matter such as Protek’s Coco Peat or Peat Moss Universal Blend. Good drainage prevents roots from sitting in water which can cause root rot and other diseases. Organic matter enhances soil structure allowing roots to grow effectively and access nutrients. Looser soil allows better air circulation around the roots and supports plant health.
Traditionally, the soil around roses is simply covered with a mulch to conserve water and suppress weeds, but in today’s rose garden, annual flowers such as alyssum, petunias, pansies, zinnias and many other are planted around rose plants to add vibrant colour and cheerful blooms, low growing height, vertical interest as well as flowers that attract pollinators.
For roses to flourish, water them deeply at least once a week or more frequently when it is hot and dry. Water in the morning and avoid overhead watering on the leaves to prevent fungal infections.
Trim dead or diseased wood in late winter or early spring and shape plants as required.
Remove spent blooms, not only will your garden look tidier, but this will also encourage the production of flowers. Do not pick more than 50 % of the blooms on any one plant at a time, rather pick again as more flowers are produced.
Use stakes or trellises for climbing varieties to help them grow upright.
For small gardens and verandas, roses can be successfully planted in containers. Place containers where they receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight and in colder climates, move containers to a sheltered location to protect them from the cold. Add Protek’s Coco Peat or Peat Moss Universal Blend as containers dry out quickly. Peat has high water holding capabilities with reduced leaching of water.
Monitor for pests and diseases and treat preventatively, where possible, or correctively, as necessary.
For healthy, bountiful blooms, fertilise regularly.
Nutrition
For healthy, colourful flowers, feed every 4 weeks with Rose & Flower Fertilizer 8:1:5 or NutriGreen Flower Power.
For quick results, apply Guanoflo as a foliar application every 2 weeks.
Protection
Roses are susceptible to attack from insects like aphids and red spider mite. Fungal infections like black spot, powdery mildew and rust affect the leaves and it is therefore better to water your roses at the base than to irrigate them.
Protection against insects:
Complete 350 SC or Imidor 350 SC are systemic insecticides that provide protection for 3 – 4 months against sucking insects such as aphids.
Apply as a soil drench to the root area of your rose plants.
Protection against fungal infections:
Tenazole 250 EW is a systemic fungicide and will protect your roses against fungal diseases such as black spot and powdery mildew.
It can be applied as preventative or corrective treatment.
Copper-Flow-Plus and Mycoguard 720 SC are contact fungicides and will preventatively protect against fungi like black spot, powdery mildew, etc.
3-in-1 protection
Rose Guard offers effective 3-in-1 protection against these common pests and diseases. This contact insecticide and systemic and contact fungicide wipe out problems before they wipe out your roses.
