SLUGS AND SNAILS IN HOME GARDENS AND FOOD GARDENS by Protek

SLUGS AND SNAILS IN HOME GARDENS AND FOOD GARDENS by Protek

Ornamental and food plants can be severely damaged by slugs and snails if left uncontrolled. Not only is the physical damage to plants undesirable, but the likely infestation of damaged plants by plant diseases may destroy plants completely. Slugs and snails operate and breed all year round but spike during moist summer conditions. Even droughts do not seem to hamper their proliferation. For home garden enthusiasts and food garden growers, Protek’s Scatterkill for Snails is a very effective, yet low risk product to prevent slugs and snails from taking over and causing cosmetic and economic damage to plants.

The unique formulation which has a bran base, metaldehyde as active ingredient and a pet repellent, is very attractive to slugs and snails, and when used according to the label instructions, will eradicate them virtually overnight.

Testing Protek’s Scatterkill for Snails under various conditions, namely all seasons, moist conditions, severe drought and rainy conditions revealed that it is always very effective. The best time to apply the bait is at dusk (early evening) and only at the low dosage of 25 grams per square meter. During tests, the product was loosely scattered around plants on soil and in pots, and never on the plants. Slugs and snails rest during the day in cool, dark places and emerge in the evening to feed. The bait is so attractive to them that they do not even feed on plants in pots. Once they consume the bait, the metaldehyde exterminates the pests within three hours by incapacitating all tissue and desiccating them.

Protek’s Scatterkill for Snails can be used with the assurance that its risk for birds, small reptiles and pets is extremely low when applied according to label instructions. During testing, the trial area had many visiting garden birds such as sparrows, bokmakieries, hadedas and Cape wagtails. Observations proved that none of them consumed the bait flakes and none of them ate the dead snails. The bait flakes are also so small that pets are not interested in them. It also contains a pet repellent.

TOXICOLOGY, PRIMARY AND SECONDARY POISONING RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH PROTEK SCATTERKILL FOR SNAILS

Metaldehyde, which is the active ingredient of Scatterkill for Snails, is moderately toxic to mammals with LD50 = 283 mg/kg for rats in its pure form. It is moderately toxic for birds with with LD50 = 170 mg/kg for quail in its pure form. The Scatterkill for Snails formulation contains only 30 g metaldehyde per kilogram, hence the toxicity of the Scatterkill for Snails product is significantly lower than that of the metaldehyde itself (about 33 times lower) and therefore it is extremely unlikely to pose a risk to pets and birds if the product is applied strictly according to label instructions. The problem of dog primary poisoning may arise, however, if a dog gets hold of a full container and eats all of it. In such an unfortunate scenario, the animal will ingest a large quantity of metaldehyde which may result in serious poisoning symptoms, especially for small dogs. The pet repellent in the bait should prevent ingestion of any large quantity, but pet owners should be the barrier against ingestion of any quantity by only applying the product according to the label instructions and keeping it stored behind lock and key out of the reach of children and pets.

Dogs and large birds that consume dead slugs and snails (this is possible by unlikely) are unlikely to develop any symptoms of secondary poisoning because slugs and snails ingest very small amounts of the bait before succumbing to the effects of metaldehyde. The slugs and snails desiccate after eating the bait and are not attractive snacks to birds and dogs.

It is practically non-toxic to earthworms and bees while being moderately toxicity to fish.

NOTE THAT DESPITE A FAVOURABLE ENVIRONMENTAL AND HUMAN TOXICOLOGICAL PROFILE OF SCATTERKILL FOR SNAILS, THE USER MUST ALWAYS USE THE PRODUCTS WITH GREAT CIRCUMSPECT

PROTECT THE INDIGENOUS GIANT LAND SNAIL AGAINST POISONING

South Africa has some unique and interesting garden wildlife that may come to harm when damaging organisms like slugs and snails are targeted with pesticides. The giant land snail is such a creature and deserves gardeners’ attention and protection wherever they occur. They are active during the day in rainy weather. When slugs and snails must be controlled with Protek’s Scatterkill for Snails, it is prudent to collect the giant land snails in the garden and take them to a place of safety to avoid them being poisoned. Good idea is for the kids to build a vivarium and keep the giant land snails there while the harmful creatures are eradicated. They are fascinating and beautiful and deserve your care and protection!
